黑热病是杜氏利什曼原虫（黑热病原虫）所引起的慢性地方性传染病。过去流行于长江以北地区。传染源是病人和病犬（癞皮狗），通过白蛉传播。每年5～8月为白蛉活动季节，白蛉吸吮患者的血液时，原虫便进入白蛉体内，发育繁殖成鞭毛体，7天后白蛉再次叮咬人体时，将鞭毛体注入，即可引起感染。原虫主要生活在患者的血液、肝、脾、骨髓和淋巴结中。
